About us
The community of Jaudon was named after James A. Jaudon. He was the land's original owner and had big plans for the land surrounding the new tracks of the Kansas City Southern Railroad line founded in 1887, upon which the "town" was built. It became a stop on the line, and in 1892, a post office was established in Jaudon. The busy KCS operated the shortest route between Kansas City and ports along the Gulf of Mexico all the way to southern Mexico.
The pub has a long and sometimes infamous history; the building site is believed to go back as far as the Civil War. The location is rumored to have been built and used for armament storage and staging point. Located only one mile from the Missouri/Kansas border, the area saw frequent use by
many notorious and pro-confederate Civil War guerrillas like Captain William Clarke Quantrill, Jesse James, and his brother Frank.
The burgundy clay foundation block exposed in some interior wall sections were used to build the original foundation and exterior walls of the building's original small footprint. These "burnt clay" foundation blocks were manufactured in Kansas City by the W. S. Dickey Company. Walter S.
Dickey founded the company which manufactured these blocks in 1885. We can date part of the building to the turn of the century as the blocks were only produced for a few years until the invention of concrete cinder blocks. The lighter and cheaper cement blocks replaced heavy clay as
the preferred foundation building material.
The north exterior clay block wall is still standing (exposed between the bathrooms). Some of the original walls were damaged over their 100+ years and had to be replaced as part of the rebuild. The best of the salvaged blocks were re-laid as the bar footrest. Today's pub has endured many changes, had many additions, and been many things. It has been an armory, post office, general store, gas station, gun shop and bar.
We've done our best to breathe new life into the old building, honor it's roots, and give our friends a nice place to gather 'in good company.' Thanks for spending time with us!
